FISHING

Snooking on the New  River
Happy Fishermen after a day on the River

Driving north from  Belize City, approximately 1/2 mile from the toll bridge, visitors will encounter the entrance to Lamanai Eco Tours Limited on the left-hand side of the highway. Our dock is located 100 yards from the highway where one can charter a boat and go fishing.  The New River is home to an abundant diversity of fish species and is often considered a fishing paradise. The New River area is a popular freshwater fishing destination in the Orange Walk district of northern Belize. Here locals and visitors alike take to the lagoons and waterways for dinner or good sport fishing. One of our knowledgeable guides will highlight the most popular species in the area and will help people identify and understand these species.

The various species of fishes include (to name a few)  Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus), Bay snook (Petenia splendida), Blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus), Mayan cichlid (Cichlasoma exophthalmos), Firemouth cichlid (Thorichthys meeki), Mayan catfish (Sciades (Ariopsis assimilis), Bigmouth sleeper (Gobiomorus dormitory), Twospot livebearer (Heterandria bimaculata) and Pike killifish (Belonesox belizanus) and at times even the Saltwater Snook (Centropomus undecimalis).
