Lamanai Archaeological Site

Lamanai (meaning Submerged Crocodile).  The site features three large pyramids, various restored stelae, open plazas as well as a small but unique ball court.  The site enjoys an isolated location in the jungle on the banks of the New River Lagoon, a river with numerous crocodiles. Since Lamanai was still occupied by the Maya when the Spanish arrived, it is one of the few sites in Belize to preserve its traditional name.   The site is home to many wildlife specie including various birds and howler monkeys. The boat trip to Lamanai is second to non and is described in 'River Tours" below.

River Tours

Whether only a tour up the New River or a trip to the impressive Mayan Site of Lamanai, one will see exotic wildlife in their natural habitat.   One needs to keep an eye out for the many native specie of birds including falcons, hawks, kites, jacanas, as well as the various orchids, bromeliads and hardwood trees lining the riverbanks.  In addition, one can spot crocodiles, manatees, iguanas, howler monkeys, turtles  and various other fauna which reside in the area.  One can also see the locals in their canoes fishing in the river.

Fishing

The New River serves as a source of food to many of the residents who reside in the area and is the most popular fresh water fishing destination in the Orange Walk District.  It is home to a wide variety of fresh water fish and at certain times even salt water snook are found.  Here both the locals and visitors alike take to the river and the lagoon for food and for sport fishing.

Birding - Lamanai

Lamanai is set on the banks of the New River Lagoon and is surrounded by virgin jungle. The combination of wetlands and jungle has made Lamanai the ideal paradise and home for most of the exotic birds found in Belize.

Birding - New River

Belize is home to more than 500 species of  resident and migratory birds which has made the country  a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.  The New River is considered one of the best places within the country to see these exotic birds.
